Mountaintop Montessori's 9-acre campus is situated on a partially forested knoll with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The school recognizes the importance of its campus for supporting “experiential learning, interactions with the natural world, and collaborative discovery.” Wolf Josey developed an amphitheater for outdoor gatherings, from individuals, to classes, to larger campus-wide happenings. The amphitheater design draws inspiration from beech leaves, and takes the form of leaf-shaped wooden decks that step down the slope, creating tiered seating around a stage composed of a cluster of decks. The design and material expression of the amphitheater resonate with the campus’s existing aesthetic and the school’s educational values.
