The District Wharf: Phase I
Location: Washington, D.C.
Completion: Summer 2017
Landscape Architect: NBW
Architect: Perkins Eastman
Role: Project Manager (Paul Josey)
Located on the historic Washington Canal along D.C.’s southwest waterfront just south of the Tidal Basin, this development created a new pedestrian destination for District residents and visitors alike. The Wharf is a mixed-use waterfront development stretching across 27 acres of land including 13 high rise buildings over multiple phases. The first phase (completed in 2017) includes the first and last segments of a multi-modal waterfront promenade stretching over a mile in length. Lined with riparian shade trees and restaurants, the promenade terminates at a 3 acre community waterfront park.
As the project manager while at NBW and working with Perkins Eastman, excluding Maine Avenue streetscape (by LAI), Paul Josey led the detailing and design of the Phase 1 open space through Design Development including the Promenade, District Square, Transit Pier, Sutton Square as well as the Channel rooftop.
