UVA Central Grounds Access
Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Status: On-going 2022
With the pending completion of the Contemplative Commons building and pedestrian bridge across Emmet Street, the route between West Grounds and Central Grounds through Newcomb Plaza will see greater pedestrian traffic. Today, barrier-free circulation exists, however, no ADA-compliant route between the upper level of the Central Grounds Parking Garage and Central Grounds itself is available. Wolf Josey worked collaboratively with UVA’s Barrier-Free Access Committee and the Arboretum and Landscape Committee to develop feasible options and understand accessibility requirements on Grounds. The design team is currently working on preliminary design plans that envision a new stair and accessible ramps at the nexus between the upper and lower Newcomb Hall plazas, Brown College, and the Contemplative Commons bridge.
