UVA University Avenue Park
At the easternmost boundary of UVA’s original 1816 land purchase, an underused 1 acre site is being reenvisioned into a public park that forefronts Monacan traditions, knowledge, and cultural practices.
In collaboration with key Tribal consultants and the University, the park’s design is rooted in Monacan land-based practices and values, both preserving the existing trees and transitioning the site into a matrix of garden, meadow, savannah, and woodland. This dynamic and biodiverse landscape will create opportunities for land-based learning while providing spaces for gathering and learning in community. Artworks, Siouan expressions, and cultural references woven throughout the park will speak to the interconnectedness of Indigenous cultures and land, and celebrate their collective renewal.
