UVA Newcomb Road South
Location: Charlottesville, VA
Status: On-going 2023
Newcomb Road South is a critical link between McCormick Road and Newcomb Plaza along the western boundary of the Brown College residential complex. In 2019 it was identified by the UVA Grounds Landscape Framework Plan as a future shared street that would improve the experience for pedestrians moving between Central Grounds and West Grounds. Wolf Josey was commissioned by UVA in 2021 to provide concept options and preliminary design plans that would envision the transformation of Newcomb Road into a pedestrian-centric corridor.
The proposed design elevates the roadway, removing curbs to allow pedestrian use of the entire space. Variation in brick pattern and contrasting material insets provide visual and textural cues to delineate the vehicular path and ensure safety for all users. In addition to this, the new layout clearly defines accessible parking areas and accommodates required firetruck and service access.
